The Axe is an ancient and prevalent apparatus used to cut, shape and cleave wood. Axe is a widely used hand tool which can also be used as weapon or as a hand tool used for chopping, cleaving, piercing and splitting. Axe was originated during stone age to cut wood and trees by ancient man. During middle age, bronze and iron blade axes where developed to cut forest trees in many parts of Europe, America and elsewhere. Though ancient role of axe is getting replaced by cutting machines and powered saws ,It still remains a useful apparatus to cut and pierce wood and other materials. Axe comprises of axe head and a axe handle. In ancient times axe head was carved out of stone and body was carved out of wood. The need and availability of metal axe came into existence in modern times only. Earlier, the axes were designed in such a manner that immensely reduces the force needed by the chopper. Today, In modern times choppers use steel headed wooden axes. Today, axes are used to perform various chopping tasks. Modern axes come in various shapes, sizes and metals.
The axes comprise of two primary sections viz Axe head and Axe haft. TheAxe Head is typically bounded by the (bit)blade at one end and (poll) butt at the other. Few axes consists of one or two bit. The edge of the bit is termed as toe. Bottom corner of bit is called heel. Sides of the Axe head is termed as cheek. Special Bearded axes are specialized axes which cuts the wood edge twice the height of the rest of the head. Other section is the Axe haft which is termed as axe handle. In ancient period axe haft was made out of hardwood but today axe hafts are carved out of durable synthetic material. Curved hafts are used for better grip and better swing. Furthermore Curved hafts are also used to pierce the material. Types of axes. Felling ax:- Felling axes are exclusively used for cutting grain of wood and chopping of trees. Felling axes comes with single as well as double bit. Felling axes are available in many shapes, sizes, weights and handle types which are used as per the usage. Splitting ax:- Splitting axes facilitates more impact and controlled work due to its more wedge designing. Wedge shape of Spitting axes causes the Axe to rip the fibers of wood apart. Splitting Axe features a variation at the head perpendicular to that of an Axe. Rather than cleaving wood side-by-side, it is used to split a level surface into a horizontal piece of wood. Axe as weapons Battle Axe:-Battle Axe is an arm-length weapon carried in one or both hands. It delivers more cleaving power against minor goal area , making it highly effective as compared to swords. Originally, battle Axes are carved out of stone and are frequently used during war time by Americans, Japanese and Africans. |
