Mallet

Mallets could be defined as a short-handled hammer which usually carry a cylindrical head of wood at the top. Mallet is used chiefly to drive a cuneus or edged tool. Mallet is a huge tool which is used to hit a surface without harming it. In sports world, long headed mallets are distinctively used to strike a ball as in polo or croquet. Furthermore, the light weight mallets are also used for striking musical instruments. Mallets usually resemble with hammers with huge head. Mallets are largely used for smoothing, flattening ,beating and crushing purposes.

Types of mallet

Rubber Mallet:-A rubber mallet is largely used when the purpose is to strike or blow softly over the metal or wood. Mallet head are primarily used for forming sheet metals because they don't leave any marks or scratches on it. Rubber mallets are used in construction work, auto body work and wood work. Rubber mallets are highly used for fitting the loose parts together and for shifting plasterboard to the right place. The uses of rubber mallets are endless as its the most widely used mallet.

Wooden mallet:-Other type of widely used mallet is a Wooden mallet, used in carpentry work to fix and strike the wooden and metal pieces together. Wooden mallets are also used for driving dowels and chisels. Unlike other wooden hammers, a wooden mallet does not disfigure the edges of a metal tools. In turn wooden mallet reduces the force required to cut the edge of the chisel.
Copper and leaden mallets:-Copper and leaden mallets are typically used to strike on gadgets or machinery to reduce the risk of damaging. Copper mallets are softer than other steel mallets. The risk of getting deformed is much more with copper and laden mallets.

Meat mallets:-Meat mallets are used to modify or tenderize meat. Meat mallets are largely available in two sided form, one side is flat possessing slight bumps and other side is wide bulged out. Meat mallets are typically made from wood, steel, plastic and other material. The usage and demand of meat mallets have declined due to invention of latest electronic tenderizers and cube steak machines. Meat mallets are also used for crushing ice and ice cubes. This is done by wrapping the ice in cloth or towel and crushing the ice with the mallet.

Less commonly used mallets include:

Rawhide mallets are less commonly usable and rarely available mallets. It consist of rolled-up rawhide which is are used for performing all kinds of leather work. Rawhide mallets are also used for carving out jewelery. They are immensely used for assembling electric motors and delicate machinery.

Plastic mallets is another kind of least used mallet which is generally made up of nylon, polycarbonate and polystyrene. Plastic Mallets are immensely used to perform high quality leather work and jewelery work.

Split head mallets are available with specifically designed attachments which can be changed to an appropriate material for the job.

Dead blow mallets are other least commonly used mallets which possess an in built cavity filled with steel or lead particles. These dead blow mallets are used for applying a powerful blow on the target without damaging it.
