IntroductionA punch is an apparatus used on pin, bolt or rivet to be squeezed in or out of a hole. Punches are used along with special ball-peen hammers to extract pins, mark drilling points and to align holes. Punches are available in all sizes and shapes. Punches are made of either high carbon steels or alloy steels. Types of punchesVarious types of punches used in engineering includes:- Transfer punch : The transfer punches are usually used to transfer the center of an existing hole to another surface. To tightly fit the tolerance of the hole whose center is to be transferred it is kept non-tapered through out its length. Center Punch: The Center punches are mostly used in drilling operation to form a small mark on the flat surface in which tip of the drill can easily fit for cutting a hole. The sides of tip of a center punch are usually inclined at right angle to each other. Prick Punch: Unlike center punch the sides of the tip of a prick punch form an angle of 30-60 degree with each other. The prick punch are mostly used for the purpose of layout and the dimple produced by it are smaller in size than that of produced by center punch. Drift punch: The drift punches comes in tapered shape which helps in the alignment of holes of two different components before inserting the fastener. Pin Punch: The lower part of a pin punch is usually cylindrical but the upper part is shaped like a hexagon. The pin punches are mostly used for driving purposes. Dooming Punch : Generally made of tool steel or wood, dooming punches are mainly used for the purpose of cutting spherical and hemispherical parts from a metal sheet. Letter Punch: Letter punches are used to mark a number or letter on the workpiece. These punches have reverse image of the letter or number to be punched so that the resulted impression appear in the original form. UsesThe punches are mainly used for
