A Vise is often called 'Vice' in the British English language. A Vise can be defined as a mechanical screw item, which is used for holding or grasping something like a part of water pipe, so that one can perform the desired work on it using some other tools. Generally a Vise has two fixed jaws, used for withholding the workpiece firmly in place, and these jaws move in correlation with each other.
Usage of Vises Vises are widely used in following industries and applications :- Automotive Industry Aerospace Industry Mechanical Lab Medicine Application Machine Tool Application Types of Vises Vises can be classified on different aspects. Some of the Vises are sometimes termed as a bench vise, that have flat and parallel jaws. Wood worker bench Vise and Engineer bench Vise are some of the bench Vises. Other types of Vises encompasses of : Hand Vises Machine Vises Compound Slide Vises Angle Vises Bench Vises Die-maker Vises Table Vises Pin Vises Jewelers Vises Metal Vises Wood Vises : Wood or a metal like cast iron, is used to make the jaws of the Wood Vises. The jaws of Wood Vises are padded in a way that it could hold the lumber without scratching it. The Wood Vises are used for grasping a wooden workpiece for doing some operation on it. A split nut is widely used in the modern Wood Vises. Working :- The workpiece and the jaws, have to slide into a suitable position, so that both are grasped strongly and quickly with each other. For this purpose the Wood Vises come with a lever by which one can easily let go the grip and also tighten the grip on the workpiece. Metal Working Vises :Metal Working Vises are also known as Engineer's Vises or Fitters Vises. In the Metal Working Vise, the jaws are made up of metals. A Metal Working Vise can simply be defined as a Vise consisting of two parallel metal (usually iron) jaws and having a large opening below. Working:- The jaws are held with each other with the help of a nut-bolt combination. To held a workpiece effectively first of all the bolt is unfastened from the nut then the movable jaw is slided over the liver inward or outward depending on the width of the workpiece. Then after the workpiece is placed between the jaws and bolt is fastened over the nut to tighten the grip. Other Types of Vises A Pipe Vise is made up of iron yoke and its jaws are made up of hardened steel. The Pipe Vises finds usage in pipe related applications. Drill Press Vises can be easily mounted on a Bench top Drill Press Vise. Precision Vises are designed specifically for the gauging related to electronics. Precision Vises are also used in medical and aerospace arenas. |
